We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Mr. Will Lamb as the new Principal of G.W. Bulluck Elementary School.
Mr. Lamb brings over 11 years of dedicated educational experience and a deep passion for fostering a nurturing and inspiring learning environment. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master of School Administration degree from North Carolina State University. He is currently enrolled in the Doctor of Education Educational Leadership Program at N.C. State, demonstrating his commitment to continuous growth and excellence in education.
Currently serving as the Assistant Principal of Beaverdam Elementary School in Raleigh, Mr. Lamb has proven himself as a dynamic and compassionate leader. We are confident that his vision and dedication will greatly benefit the G.W. Bulluck community.

Earlier this week, the Edgecombe Educational Foundation celebrated our Scholar Teachers, benefactors, and supporters at a luncheon to highlight the progress made over the past five years and the vision forward. In addition to a delicious lunch, the program included remarks from Executive Director Arlane Gordon-Bray, Principal Matt Smith, Foundation Chairwoman Dr. Evelyn Wilson, Superintendent Dr. Andy Bryan, and a dynamic Q&A with Scholar Teacher Jackie Dickens. We currently have five Scholar Teachers working in our schools, and more are in the pipeline. This program is made possible because of generous donors; no donation is too small. The Annie and Sallie Ann Wheeler Memorial Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce the 2024 scholarship recipient. Kalyn Johnson was named the winner during an Awards program at North Edgecombe High School (NEHS) on May 16, 2024.
Scholarship co-founder Linwood E. Hinton and Lily Wheeler Lowe, mother of scholarship co-founder Jamaal D. Pittman, announced the winner and made special presentations to all the applicants. Hinton and Pittman are NEHS graduates, class of 2008 and 1999, respectively. The scholarship is named in honor of their late great-aunts, Annie and Sallie Ann Wheeler. The two sisters raised three generations of proud NEHS Warriors and devoted their lives to ensuring the children in their family had access to education and opportunities.
When reflecting on Johnson's scholarship application, Pittman said, "Kalyn is an exceptional student and already demonstrates a deep desire to be of service to her community in a lasting and meaningful way." Hinton added, "Kalyn is a well-rounded student building a strong foundation for success in her future pursuits."
During the NEHS Awards program, Johnson received a souvenir check, noting her $4,000 scholarship award. The one-time, non-renewable award will be paid directly to East Carolina University, where Johnson will attend in the Fall.
Four additional scholarship applicants were also recognized by the Wheeler Scholarship Committee. Zykendrick Hyman, Na’Siyah Fountain, Angel Sharpe and Zyrian Pittman were presented with certificates recognizing their impressive applications. Scholarship applicants are required to have a grade point average of at least 2.5 and provide evidence of strength of character and a commitment to helping others. They must also have plans to enroll in a two or four-year college.
The scholarship endowment, believed to be the first of its kind established specifically for North Edgecombe students, is awarded annually to a graduating senior. Donors are welcome to support the scholarship fund. Tax-deductible donations can be made at www.WheelerScholarship.com.

About the Scholarship Partners: Jamaal D. Pittman (class of ’99) is an award-winning copy editor and screenwriter who resides in Los Angeles, California. Pittman is a graduate of Morehouse College and the author of The Copy Editor’s Life(Style) Guide. United States Marine Gunnery Sergeant Linwood E. Hinton (class of ’08) is a combat veteran and poet. He is currently serving our country as Operations Chief for Marine Aircraft Group 39 aboard Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton, California. Hinton is a graduate of Ashford University and Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The North Carolina Community Foundation is the only statewide community foundation serving North Carolina and has administered more than $270 million in grants since 1988. A major component of NCCF’s mission is to bolster rural philanthropy at local, regional and national levels.

We're thrilled to announce that a team from Martin Millennium Academy won Best in Show "Innovation" for North Carolina in the NASA Plant the Moon competition with their project, "Did you ever think Bok choy needed heat lamps?" NASA Plant the Moon is an innovative competition where students propose ways to grow plants on the lunar surface. Their creativity and ingenuity are truly out of this world! Congratulations to these amazing students and mentors on this incredible accomplishment!

The North Edgecombe United Way Student Leadership team was recently recognized at the annual United Way - Tar River Region Champions Luncheon held at the Dunn Center in Rocky Mount. Their dedication and hard work in fundraising have made an incredible impact, boosting the funds raised at their school by a staggering 475%! As we approach the summer break, we are excited to announce an opportunity for your child to continue their learning journey over summer break. In line with our commitment to fostering continuous education and leveraging technology for academic enrichment, we are pleased to inform you that student devices will be permitted for summer learning activities.
- K-11th Grade Students will not need to return their school issued device at the end of this school year.
- Your child will be allowed to use their school-issued device for educational purposes during summer break.
- These devices will be utilized to access online resources, educational apps, and other digital tools that support learning.
- Students are encouraged to engage in activities that align with their academic interests and goals, under the guidance of their teachers or with recommended resources provided by our district.
Renewal of devices will be seamlessly facilitated upon students' return to school, allowing for uninterrupted access to technology-enhanced learning

Prior to Spring Break, our 6th grade students in Ms. Garrow's class engaged with the novel, Hatchet, through an experience with Cub Scout leader, Mr. McFadyen. During this experience students learned various survival techniques as displayed in the novel, and were immersed in the experience through our engagement lab. We are thrilled to announce that Hannah Clay from Macclesfield has been selected as the winner of the 2024 Electric Youth Tour Contest by Edgecombe-Martin County EMC!
Hannah will be representing our community at this year's event in Washington, D.C. in June. The Washington Youth Tour, a prestigious program offered by electric cooperatives nationwide, selects high school juniors like Hannah to participate in a week-long adventure.
Through an essay contest, Hannah stood out among her peers by showcasing her passion and dedication. Now, she'll have the incredible opportunity to network with over a thousand students from across the country, witness our legislature in action, and learn about the vital role of electric cooperatives in our communities.
Hannah, daughter of Kelli and Eric Clay and a junior at Edgecombe Early College, is already making waves in various extracurricular activities including Beta Club, student council, and her church youth group.
In her own words, "I’m thrilled about joining the Youth Tour because of the opportunities it presents and the valuable life experiences it offers. Exploring Washington, D.C., will provide me with exposure to the capital and opportunities that are unique and unmatched."

Under the guidance of ECC instructor Kevin Strickland, construction students at SouthWest Edgecombe High School are adding the final touches on their “dogdominium.” They're gearing up to showcase their incredible work at next week's North Carolina SkillsUSA competition in Greensboro, NC! This student competition celebrates leadership and practical skills in trades.
This week, 6th grade students visited Medoc Mountain State Park where they were able to go on a hike, explore their surroundings, and engage in outdoor activities as they summarized their reading of the novel "Hatchet".
